This week, the Municipal Department of Urban Cleaning (DMLU) is carrying out the Bota-Fora project, which collects bulky waste such as appliances, broken furniture and mattresses in ten communities in Porto Alegre. The service takes place from Tuesday, 25th, to Friday, 28th, from 8 am.
The objective of the project is to help the population to correctly dispose of these materials, which are not collected by regular collections. In this way, they are prevented from being thrown into inappropriate places, such as streams and storm drains, causing obstructions and flooding. Bota-Fora serves regions in a situation of social vulnerability, benefiting around 200 communities.
Residents of the areas served must place their waste in front of their homes the night before, or by 7:30 am on the day of Bota-Fora. The service is publicized through posters at strategic points in the communities.
The municipal secretary of Urban Services, Marcos Felipi Garcia, highlights the importance of the project for the janitorship of the city. “Bota-Fora provides opportunities for citizens to correctly dispose of materials and waste, which could form irregular sources of garbage. We will remain vigilant and oversee the services provided to the population”, he says.
DMLU’s general director, Paulo Marques, emphasizes the social commitment of the population with the correct disposal of waste. “The citizen is a key player in the fight against illegal disposal. If everyone is aware that all materials have an appropriate place to be delivered, and that they have financial value if sent for recycling or reuse, we will be able to build a better future for our city and even contribute to the generation of income for those who make a living from sorting waste.”
In addition to Bota-Fora, the disposal of these materials can be done directly at one of the DMLU’s Destiny Units (UDC). The UDCs, also called Ecopoints, receive wood, old furniture and debris and are strategically distributed throughout the city. For more information about the locations, access here.
