The Committee of Italians Abroad in Rio Grande do Sul (COMITES-RS) is a body that represents Italian citizens living in the state and works in partnership with associations and public authorities to recognize and value Italian culture. On the 14th and 15th of July, COMITES-RS counselors were in Carlos Barbosa, one of the municipalities that best preserves the memory of immigrants, to participate in a cultural agenda and propose projects to promote ethnicity.
Streets in the community of Cinco da Boa Vista are named in honor of the Lombard presence
One of these projects was the inauguration of the nomenclature of the streets of the community of Cinco da Boa Vista, which were named in allusion to the Lombard presence in the locality. The festive event was attended by the Consul General of Italy in Porto Alegre, Valerio Caruso, and by the advisor of COMITES-RS Valdecir Ferrari, a native of Carlos Barbosa. “You can count on me and on COMITES in whatever it is possible to rescue from our Italianness”, said Ferrari.
The president of COMITES-RS, Cristina Mioranza, praised the public administration’s support for carrying out the agenda in the municipality. “Carlos Barbosa is a different municipality in the region and works together to preserve the Italian memory”, she said.
Board meeting and creation of the youth commission
Another highlight of the COMITES-RS agenda was the meeting of the body, which had the participation of Italian associations in the region. Counselor Neiva Maria Cantarelli explained that the objective is to update the associations’ data and encourage integration between them. She also informed that the associations can participate in the voting to choose the representatives of Brazil in the Consiglio Generale degli Italiani all’Estero (CGIE), an advisory body of the Italian government.
Among the novelties announced was the creation of the COMITES-RS youth commission, which aims to involve new generations in the appreciation of Italian culture.
