Those who live in Canoas have at their disposal 64 outdoor gyms spread across parks and squares in the city. They are public spaces equipped with gym equipment that allow the practice of free and accessible physical activities for people of all ages and socioeconomic levels.
Outdoor gyms play a crucial role in promoting the physical and mental health of the population. According to research, exercising outdoors offers superior benefits compared to indoors. This occurs due to the reduction of stress, increased brain oxygenation and the release of substances that promote a better mood and a feeling of happiness. In addition, these outdoor activities also help prevent diseases such as diabetes and hypertension.
In addition to the benefits mentioned, outdoor gyms provide favorable social integration, enabling contact with nature, flexibility of schedules and safety for practitioners.
Revitalization and expansion
Since 2021, Canoas City Hall has been investing in the revitalization and expansion of outdoor gyms. So far, 39 spaces have been restored, ten by the Municipal Department of Sports and Leisure (SMEL) and 29 through a counterpart company. Maintenance consists of replacing parts of the equipment (bearings, benches and handles), refurbishment, removal of existing paint, application of an antioxidant primer and paint.
SMEL also conducts periodic inspections to check the conditions of the gyms and take care of painting and replacing broken or stolen parts. If residents identify a gym without maintenance, they can call the Citizen Service Center (CAC), at 0800-510-1234.
In addition, 11 new gyms were installed to replace old ones or in new locations. The forecast is that five more will be created in new parts of the city in the coming months.
