The level of the Rio dos Sinos rose above expectations and surpassed the bed of Praia do Paquetá, in Canoas, on the morning of this Friday (14). The water invaded the main street and some houses in the area, putting residents on alert. The Civil Defense is monitoring the situation and providing assistance to families affected by the flood.
According to the Canoas Climate Resilience Office (Eclima/Civil Defense), the river reached the 2.72 meter mark at around 11 am, which characterizes a flood stage at Praia do Paquetá. The gyms at the Thiago Wurt and Paulo VI schools are prepared and available to receive the displaced, if necessary.
Other critical points
In addition to Praia do Paquetá, in the Mato Grande neighborhood, two other points in the municipality are considered critical for flooding: Rua da Barca, in the Harmonia neighborhood, and Berto Círio street, in the São Luís neighborhood. Civil Defense is monitoring these locations and advising residents on the necessary precautions.
The forecast is that the river level will continue to rise in the next few hours, due to the rains that hit the region. The Civil Defense recommends that people avoid approaching the banks of the river and pay attention to the periodic bulletins that will be published on the City Hall’s social networks.
