In Canoas, the Municipal Department of Urban Services (SMSU) issues a warning about the care needed to avoid the irregular disposal of tree pruning on sidewalks and public roads. Improper disposal can cause several problems, from difficulties in walking on the streets and sidewalks to the clogging of drainage systems.
What is the correct way to dispose of it?
The best option is to use the ecopoints available in the city. There are five ecopoints where citizens can dispose of up to two cubic meters (equivalent to approximately a pickup truck or trailer) of waste, including branches and pruning waste. Ecopoints are open daily, including Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, from 8 am to 12 pm and from 1 pm to 6 pm, with the exception of Ecoponto Niterói, which is open from Monday to Friday, from 8 am to 12 pm and from 1 pm to 5 pm, and on Saturdays, from 8am to 12pm.
Which species can or cannot be pruned?
The practice of pruning in the mentioned period is related to the fruiting moment of some species. However, not all trees require pruning and, in fact, some are harmed by this procedure when done indiscriminately.
For trees located on private land, it is not necessary to obtain a report, authorization or communicate to the Municipal Environment Secretariat (SMMA) if they are of the following species:
Acerola (Malpighia marginata), Plum (Prunus salicina), Banana (Musa paradisiaca), Persimmon (Diospyros kaki), Sweet fig (Ficus carica), Orange, bergamot, lemon and similar trees (Citrus spp.), Apple (Malus sylvestris), Papaya (Carica papaya), Quince (Cydonia vulgaris), Grapevine (Vitis vinifera), Pear tree (Pirus communis), Peach tree (Prunus persica) and Mango tree (Mangifera indica).
In the case of the other species not mentioned above (whether fruitful or not), it is necessary to obtain authorization from the SMMA before carrying out the pruning.
How to request authorization?
Pruning must be carried out by qualified professionals to avoid accidents and damage to the trees. To obtain authorization, you must apply through the Citizen Service Center, by phone 08005101234 or by email [email protected].
Check out the cases in which pruning may be authorized: conflicts with elements of the urban environment (traffic lights, aerial networks, light fixtures, poles, indicative and traffic signs, marquises, building facades, roofs and others); when it creates obstacles to the visibility of traffic and pedestrian crossings; removal of dry, diseased, badly situated branches and those attacked by pests; danger of damage and non-damaging ornamental pruning.
