In Brazil, researchers count at least three outbreaks between 2020 and the beginning of this year. They alert, however, to the underreporting of the disease in the country, in an article published in January in the scientific journal Frontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology.
The registration of new cases in Pernambuco may indicate a new outbreak.
“We have had cases in Recife before, but until we prove that the strain is not the same, we could [pensar em um novo surto]”, says Manoel Marques Evangelista de Oliveira, researcher at the Laboratory of Taxonomy, Biochemistry and Bioprospection of Fungi at the Instituto Oswaldo Cruz.
According to him, Fiocruz is already in contact with the UFPE (Federal University of Pernambuco) group, led by Professor Reginaldo Gonçalves de Lima Neto, which meets the demands of hospitals.
Along with three other species (one of the same genus, Candida albicans, known to cause genital candidiasis and “thrush”), Candida auris is on the list of fungi that present a risk to public health, according to the WHO (World Health Organization) . Overall mortality ranged from 29% to 53%.
