An application that facilitates the donation of goods and services to houses and homes that welcome children and adolescents in socially vulnerable situations in Porto Alegre was launched by the Public Ministry of Rio Grande do Sul. “Adopt a tomorrow” is the result of a partnership between the MP, the Pontifical Catholic University of RS (PUCRS), GX2 Tecnologia and the Association of Computer and Telecommunications Users of RS (SUCESU-RS), an entity that works to promote of social responsibility in the IT market.
The application is an example of how technology can contribute to ESG (Environment, Social and Governance) practices, a growing trend in companies that seek to generate a positive impact on society. The idea arose from the need to bring institutions that care for children and adolescents at risk closer to people who want to collaborate with them, but don’t know how.
SUCESU-RS was responsible for creating ties between the agents involved in the project. Nilson Ayala, President of the entity, says that there is a growing interest from associates in participating in social actions, especially related to childhood and youth. “SUCESU-RS concentrates around 65% of the GDP of technology companies in the State. Our job is to be a multiplier of opportunities to do good, creating synergy between those who need it and those who are interested and can help”, he says.
Ayala is the adoptive father of two children and is well aware of the difficulties faced by homes in Porto Alegre. He reports that he received many contacts from people who wanted to help but didn’t know how. “I went to the Porto Alegre Child and Youth Prosecutor, Cinara Vianna Dutra Braga, and tried to find the closest institutions that needed what was there to be delivered, but it was a difficult, time-consuming job”, he explains.
With the application, the task of Ayala and other people and entities that are dedicated to helping will be easier. When accessing “Adopt a tomorrow”, the user can choose an institution to support, see what their needs are and make the donation directly through the app. Institutions can also register in the application and update their demands.
The application was initially developed by students from the Agência Experimental de Engenharia de Software (AGES) at PUCRS, as part of a course. Afterwards, it was perfected by the team of new talents from GX2 Tecnologia, who are part of the company’s Rocket Talents program, which encourages the training of professionals in the IT market. The young people were supervised by senior professionals from GX2, who embraced the cause.
SUCESU-RS has a history of social contributions. During the pandemic, the entity mobilized its associates to donate food and hygiene items to needy communities. In addition, it created a campaign to collect electronic equipment to allow children and adolescents to attend online classes during social isolation. The entity is also often one of the supporters of the Race for Adoption.
Ayala reveals that there is interest in creating a board or vice-presidency dedicated to social responsibility at SUCESU-RS. “We understand that it is our responsibility to be a place where everyone meets to do good through technology”, he concludes.
With the application, Nilson’s task and that of other people and entities that are dedicated to helping will become easier. When registering, each person visualizes what the institutions need. Items requested range from electronic equipment to services such as haircuts. Tutoring classes, hygiene items and food can also be donated.
“Of course, as a father at heart, I always think about how we can transform the lives of these children who stay in these homes sometimes until they are 18 years old and go straight out into the world. If we can offer conditions for them to grow well and with access to education, for example, we are already doing our part”, emphasizes Nilson Ayala.
“Adopt a tomorrow” is enabled for the registration of 70 shelters and homes in the capital of Rio Grande do Sul that serve around 800 children and adolescents. It is available on Play Store for Android users and App Store for iPhone.
