A 19-year-old Irishman named Niall Kavanagh has died three weeks after doctors diagnosed an ear infection rather than a brain tumour. Although this incident took place in 2021, it is only now that the international media has made it public.
According to the British newspaper Mirror, in September of that year, Kavanagh’s mother, named Claire, noticed that her son was not well after playing a football match.
Niall called his mother to inform her that he was sick, but ended up passing out. He was taken to the emergency room and, on the following two Saturdays, he returned to the hospital, being released afterwards with suspected virus or ear infection.

Claire continued to experience the same symptoms and scheduled another appointment with a general practitioner, but her son did not show up to accompany her.
The disquiet grew when Niall’s brother visited him and noticed that something was wrong. He called his mother to let her know about his brother’s situation and said he would put him to bed. Upon arriving, Claire found Niall sitting up in bed, conscious but unable to speak, just making gestures.
Upon returning to the hospital, the medical team suspected that the patient had had a seizure and, therefore, tests were carried out to investigate the situation. During the evaluation, a lesion in the brain caused by a tumor was found.
After Niall had an operation to remove the injury, he recovered within three weeks and was able to resume his daily activities without any problems. Unfortunately, in the second surgery, he was unable to regain consciousness.
After being transferred to the ICU, doctors reported that the young man’s brain was inflamed and that there was nothing they could do to reverse the situation. After three weeks, the boy’s death was confirmed.
Claire is currently employed in Brain Tumor Research and advocates for increased funding for studies related to this type of cancer.
