A survey by the Brazilian Consumer Defense Association, Proteste, found cheeses outside the standard established by the Brazilian health authorities.
The researchers came across cheeses containing a quantity of bacteria above the permitted level and with sodium higher than that described in the table on the package.
A total of 49 brands were tested:
18 of curds
gorgonzola 9
6 processed (for fondue)
16 of grated
The survey, which Metrópoles had access to, identified the presence of Escherichia coli above the permitted level in the Porto Alegre and SertaNorte coalho cheese brands. This bacteria in large numbers can cause diarrhea and complications. Proteste asked the competent bodies to remove these lots from the points of sale.
Cheeses with a lot of sodium were also found. The rules in Brazil allow only 20% above what is stated on the label.
