Last Thursday (23), the Israeli Federation of Rio Grande do Sul (FIRS) held its traditional Breakfast, which had the illustrious presence of Daniel Zohar Zonshine, Israeli Ambassador to Brazil. The event aimed to strengthen ties between the Jewish community in Rio Grande do Sul and the State of Israel, in addition to discussing topics relevant to both countries.
One of the subjects addressed was the growth of anti-Semitism in Brazil and Israel’s view of this scenario. Ambassador Zonshine called for “zero tolerance” with racism and hate speech, recalling the recent case of the Flow podcast, in which an influencer defended the existence of a Nazi party in Brazil. “Holocaust is the extermination of 6 million Jews. It didn’t happen out of nowhere. It was based on Nazi ideologies and the hate speech of troubled minds. The lesson we can and should take from this is to have zero tolerance for this type of situation,” he said.
The president of FIRS, Marcio Chachamovich, highlighted the importance of the ambassador’s visit to the Federation and the debate on this topic. “In addition to enriching the dialogue between the Jewish community in Rio Grande do Sul and Israel, Zonshine’s presence is essential to strengthen cultural, social and economic ties,” he said.
Other issues related to the current situation in Brazil and Israel were also discussed, addressing challenges and opportunities that countries face. The ambassador shared perspectives on the embassy’s ongoing initiatives with the Jewish community.
The FIRS Breakfast was attended by the Board of Directors of the Federation and several representatives of the local Jewish community.
