The synthetic laminate company Crespi do Brasil, headquartered in Novo Hamburgo, Rio Grande do Sul, received Gold certification from the Sustainable Origin program yesterday (21). With more than 60% of the program’s indicators achieved, the company has stood out in the search for increasingly sustainable production, in line with the principles of ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance).
During the event, Silvana Dilly, superintendent of the Brazilian Association of Leather, Footwear and Artifacts Component Companies (Assintecal), highlighted the importance of this moment not only for the company, but for the entire footwear production chain in Brazil. She emphasized that the Sustainable Origin is the only ESG certification in the sector in the world, and having another company certified is a reason for joy and an indication that they are on the right path, towards an industry that is increasingly sustainable and in line with trends in consumption.
Paulo Roberto dos Reis Filho, director of the company, emphasized that Crespi do Brasil considers sustainability not only in relation to its physical structure and the environmental aspect. He stated that they want to contribute to the local community through actions that promote education, health, sports, value culture and generate jobs, always with the aim of promoting social, economic and political inclusion.
The certification of Crespi do Brasil by the Sustainable Origin program drew the attention of the auditors due to the change in direction of its research and development center, Studio Crespi Design, as of 2020. The studio started to create collections focused on the incorporation of eco-friendly products. responsible and new finishing possibilities.
In this context, the company developed the Ecofit base, which uses 30% viscose fiber in its composition, an artificial fiber from a renewable source produced from wood chips with a low resin content or from cotton seeds, replacing the threads of petroleum origin.
Based on this new orientation, in 2022, the company made the complete transition to the Free Contracting Environment, starting to use exclusively renewable energies in its production process. This change made it possible to avoid the emission of approximately 27.6 thousand tons of CO2, significantly contributing to the reduction of the carbon footprint.
Another highlight mentioned by the director is the replacement of fuel oil with natural gas and the replacement of fluorescent lamps with LED lamps in 90% of its facilities. These actions resulted in a 15% reduction in electricity consumption and a 20% reduction in natural gas and firewood consumption.
