The State of Rio Grande do Sul is preparing to celebrate the 4th State Migrant Week, an event that will take place between the 19th and 23rd of June and aims to stimulate the debate on migrants as subjects of rights. The initiative is promoted by the Department of Justice, Citizenship and Human Rights (SJCDH), through the Committee for Attention to Migrants, Refugees, Stateless Persons and Victims of Human Trafficking in Rio Grande do Sul (Comirat/RS).
In order to strengthen dialogue and promote public policies focused on the subject, the head of the SJCDH, Mateus Wesp, highlights the importance of this event. He points out that Rio Grande do Sul receives a significant number of migrants and refugees and that it is essential to provide dignity to these people, facilitating access to documents and offering professional training. For Wesp, the actions carried out during the Migrant Week represent a crucial step towards the integration of these individuals into Rio Grande do Sul society.
Leonardo Goulart, president of Comirat/RS and head of the Special Affairs Division of the Department of Justice and Drug Policy at the SJCDH, points out that Rio Grande do Sul is one of the Brazilian states that receives the most migrants. He emphasizes the need to expand the rights of these people, since they face several obstacles, from access to documentation, health, social protection to formal work. Goulart emphasizes that Migrant Week amplifies the struggle to guarantee rights and highlights the State’s commitment to valuing and working to defend and expand the civil, political and social rights of migrants and refugees.
The official opening of the 4th Migrant Week will take place on Monday (6/19), at 6 pm, at the Legislative Assembly. Throughout the week, virtual seminars and the presentation of state public policy for the care of migrants and refugees are planned.
The institution of the week dedicated to migrants was established by State Law 15.367/19, with the aim of encouraging the creation of public policies to protect these individuals. In addition to the capital, Porto Alegre, the cities of Marau and Santana do Livramento also prepared a special program focused on the theme.
