In Canoas is the pioneering Civil Construction Waste Recycling Plant (RCC), responsible for transforming rubble into raw material used in public works and local revitalization. Monthly, approximately 26 thousand tons of waste are received by the service, resulting in an average production of eight thousand cubic meters of recycled aggregates, such as gravel, sand and others.
The plant manager, Evandro Pereira, highlights the magnitude of the project: “We have a fantastic project here, because not only do we separate the materials, but we also recycle construction waste, something unheard of in Rio Grande do Sul. In addition to not making the material available, degrading the environment, another great benefit is that the city hall can reuse these products in works, revitalization of squares and other projects”.
Waste arrives at the site through public cleaning services, ecopoint buckets, public works and private transporters. Direct access by the population is not allowed. Waste that cannot be recycled is disposed of in an environmentally appropriate manner. In addition, the project gradually recovers the area where the plant is located, which for many years served as a landfill for inert waste. SBR Recycling is responsible for carrying out this work.
The importance of this project can be measured in numbers. It is estimated that, without the plant’s action, around 500,000 cubic meters of waste without an adequate destination would accumulate annually at the site, equivalent to approximately 80 popular housing buildings.
It is important to note that the City Hall does not offer a collection service for this type of waste. Responsibility for proper disposal rests with the generator itself. Dumping debris on sidewalks, streets, squares or vacant lots is considered an act that is harmful to urban cleanliness, and those responsible are subject to fines that can reach R$ 1,600.80.
To dispose of this waste, residents of Canoas must use the municipal ecopoints, with a daily limit of two cubic meters, equivalent to a small car bucket, or hire specialized transporters, such as buckets.
The list of ecopoints and waste received can be consulted here.
The Ecopoints are open daily (including Saturdays, Sundays and holidays), from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm and from 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm, with the exception of Ecoponto Niterói, which is open from Monday to Friday, from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm and from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm, and on Saturdays from 8am to 12pm.
