The exhibition “Singular occurrence: the 184 years of Machado de Assis” will be presented by the Public Library of the State (BPE), from June 15th to August 26th. The exhibition, curated by Cláudia Antunes, will be located in Sala Borges de Medeiros and will exhibit first editions of the writer’s works, documents about his life and work, as well as a review of literary criticism and a wide iconography related to Machado de Assis.
The title of the exhibition refers to the short story “Singular Occurrence”, published in Histórias sem data, by Garnier, in 1884, three years after Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas. The choice of this name is based on the premise that Machado de Assis was a unique writer in the history of Brazilian literature.
Among the highlights of the exhibition will be the first editions of works such as Páginas colecdas, Poesias completas, Dom Casmurro, A Semana and Relíquias de casa Velha. In addition, studies by authors from Rio Grande do Sul, such as Alcides Maya, Augusto Meyer, Moysés Vellinho, Guilhermino Cesar and Flávio Loureiro Chaves, who were the first to critically analyze the work of Machado de Assis, will be presented.
Machado de Assis’ personal library will be recreated based on the works of Jean Michel Massa and José Luís Jobim. BPE gathered some of the titles that were part of the writer’s library, including in their original languages, demonstrating the authors who were fundamental in his work and who inspired him, such as Eça de Queiroz, Shakespeare, Edgar Allan Poe, Luiz de Camões, Miguel by Cervantes, Victor Hugo, Honoré de Balzac, Dante Alighieri, and the Brazilians Gregório de Matos and Gonçalves Dias, among others.
The curator of the exhibition, Cláudia Antunes, points out that knowing a writer’s library is a treasure for readers of his work, as it makes it possible to study Machado as a reader.
Furthermore, the exhibition will reveal a little-known facet of Machado de Assis as a translator. He translated works from French and English and studied Greek and German. Readers of the 19th and 20th centuries had access to some titles by renowned authors of universal literature, such as the poem “The Crow”, by Edgar Allan Poe, and “The Workers of the Sea”, by Victor Hugo, through the translations made by the author. creator of Dom Casmurro.
