- four contraceptives;
- two types of treatment for Parkinson’s disease;
- three presentations of simvastatin, used to control cholesterol;
- three alternatives to control rhinitis;
- geriatric diapers.
The Popular Pharmacy also offers 22 medications to control asthma, diabetes and hypertension free of charge to all citizens. For this list, nothing changes: the gratuities will be maintained.
The drug access program will be relaunched this Wednesday by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, at a ceremony in Recife.
According to the government, those who receive Bolsa Família will not need to make a new registration to withdraw these medications for free. The identification of the beneficiary will be carried out by the Popular Pharmacy system itself.

Program will be redesigned
The Popular Pharmacy was created in 2004, with the objective of guaranteeing the continuity of the treatment of diseases through free or discounted medicines and geriatric diapers.
Last year, the Popular Pharmacy program served around 20 million people. There were almost 9 million attendances less than the number recorded in 2015 – the year with the highest volume of resources allocated to modalities with and without co-payment.
According to Cuida Brasil, the drop in the number of people served is related to the reduction in investment over the years.
This Wednesday, the government should also announce the introduction of Popular Pharmacy in indigenous communities – who will be able to appoint a representative to withdraw the medication, without the need to inform CPF.
This modality of the program will be tested in a pilot project in the Yanomami territory, in Roraima, according to the government.
How to take the medication
Patients wishing to obtain free or discounted medicines from Farmácia Popular must go to an accredited establishment. These are pharmacies and drugstores that display the seal “Here is a Popular Pharmacy”.
Citizens must present two documents:
- an official identity document with photo and CPF number;
- medical prescription within the period of validity, whether issued by the SUS or by a private physician.
For the removal of geriatric diapers, the patient must be over 60 years old or be a person with a disability. And present a prescription, report or certificate proving the need to use diapers.
If the patient is unable to attend the pharmacy, the medications can be picked up by a legal representative or attorney. This person needs to bring the prescription and official documents of who will use the medicine.
