The historic Porto Alegre International Marathon, one of the traditional events on the street racing calendar in Brazil, will be marked by a significant change. In its 38th edition, the marathon will be broadcast live on open television, which represents a milestone for the street racing segment in the country.
The 42,195 meter race will take place on June 4th and will be shown on TVE RS, TV Brasil and also on Olympikus, the event’s sports brand, on YouTube. This unique and comprehensive broadcast is unprecedented for Brazilian road racing.
This year’s 38th Porto Alegre International Marathon is one of the most important editions in the event’s history. In 2023, which marks its 40th anniversary, the marathon will distribute around BRL 180,000 in cash prizes, with BRL 30,000 destined for the great male and female champions of the race. In addition, there will be cash prizes for the half marathon and the country run, which will be held on June 3, the day before the marathon, with a 7 km course along the Guaíba shore.
More than 16 thousand athletes, from all Brazilian states and other countries, will participate in the races in the capital of Rio Grande do Sul. The registration period ended last Sunday, the 21st.
The live stream of the marathon will begin shortly before 7am start time on June 4th. The coverage will be done jointly by TVE RS, a public television station in Rio Grande do Sul, by TV Brasil, a Brazilian public free-to-air network, and by the Olympikus channel on YouTube. The racing journalist, Sérgio Rocha, will be responsible for the comments throughout the race.
Rocha, from the multiplatform channel “Corrida no Ar”, expressed his happiness for being part of this historic moment of the event and for commenting on the race. He highlighted his passion for this contact with both elite and amateur runners. According to him, the marathon deserves this visibility and, finally, the time has come to insert it in the official history. He is very excited about the opportunity.
This year’s edition of the Porto Alegre International Marathon promises to be a close race, with the biggest prize in the history of the event, totaling around R$ 180,000 in cash. Especially in the main event, R$ 146,000 will be distributed to the top five in the male and female categories. More than 50 elite athletes are confirmed for the start.
Among them is Vestus Cheboi, the Kenyan who won the title at the São Paulo Marathon in April this year. There are also other confirmed African athletes, in addition to marathon runners from Latin American countries. Among the foreigners who will compete for the podium, Paraguayan Derlys Ayala stands out, with two recent participations in the Olympic Games
