Redecomep, a project designed and structured since 2005, was officially inaugurated on May 11 during a ceremony at the Federal University of Pelotas. Formed by an optical fiber infrastructure capable of transmitting data at high speed, the network allows research, experiments and support for the operation of advanced information and communication services. The Recop Network is the local version of the national Redecomep, an initiative of the National Education and Research Network (RNP), and is already being used by UFPel since 2017, made possible thanks to the partnership with Vetorial Tecnologia, which invested more than R$ 150,000.00 and is the company responsible for the maintenance and technical management of Redecomep.
In all, there are more than 50 kilometers of optical fiber that connect the units of UFPel in the Center to the Campus Capão do Leão, the headquarters of Embrapa Clima Temperado in Cascata, the Municipality of Pelotas, the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology South-river -grandense (IFSul) and other partners. Thanks to the network, it is possible to reduce connection costs, in addition to increasing speed and offering better conditions for teaching, research and extension, also reinforcing security and democratization of internet access.
high quality infrastructure
The network was installed at the end of 2019, but the official opening was delayed due to the pandemic. In 2006 there had already been an attempt to implement it in the region, but without success. In 2013, the project received new negotiations thanks to the agreement signed between UFPel, CEEE and RNP, but it was the entry of Vetorial that made its implementation possible through the signing of a Technical Cooperation Agreement, in 2016. would be responsible for implementing and maintaining RECOP. Between 2017 and 2019, there were seven phases of the project activating the network in each of the partners.
The CEO of Vetorial and Grupo Razaoinfo, Cristiano Dutra Borges, highlighted that through this type of project the company consolidates its mission of promoting human, social and educational development through innovation. “We are very pleased to participate in the community and see that some of the company’s actions, even though they are private, manage to impact thousands of people. The most important part is that there are 22 points within a region that goes to Capão do Leão connected in a high capacity network to develop research, teaching and innovation”, he mentioned during the ceremony.
According to RNP’s general director, Nelson Simões da Silva, the Network is thinking 100 years ahead. “We need an abundant capacity for connectivity and an educated population, we have a challenge of qualifying society through a community network, focused on the development of research, teaching and extension”, he emphasized.
The dean of UFPel, Isabela Andrade, paid attention to the contribution of managers and technicians so that the network is in full operation. “The project went through four administrations at the University and each one contributed in some way to the installation of the network, which occurred at an important moment. From the installation, it was possible to maintain the teaching, research, extension and innovation activities of the University during the pandemic”, she stressed.
Also present were Serpro’s Products and Services-Operations Superintendence Division manager, Gelsomar Souza Brasil, who drew attention to the importance of the initiative that allows carrying out various activities that were previously carried out exclusively in person, the assistant chief of Research and Development at Embrapa, Gustavo Heiden, for whom the Network provides connectivity, speed and quality for the core activity of the institution which is research, and the special advisor to the Municipality of Pelotas, Luiz van der Lann. “The virtual world has arrived and with the network we will all be connected, reaching millions of users, enabling a great advance for our region”, said Lann.
RNP has already built 52 metropolitan networks for education and research in the national territory, present in all capitals of Brazil and in the Federal District, in addition to 25 municipalities in the interior. There are more than 560 user institutions and an optical network extending over 4,000 kilometers, operating at speeds between 1 and 100 Gbits per second.
