On June 17th, at 5pm, Richard John will open the exhibition entitled “Mimetic Drawings” at V744atelier, in Porto Alegre, under the coordination of artist Vilma Sonaglio. This exhibition is the result of his doctoral thesis, entitled “Mimetic Drawings and The Tyranny of Form”, defended in 2018. The exhibited works explore representation and copying as fundamental elements of language, both visual and written, having as a starting point departure from the ancient Greek concept of mimesis.
Richard John has participated in several group exhibitions since the late 1980s. The 49th Salão Paranaense (1992), the XVI Salão do Jovem Artist (1996) and the most recent one, “Próxima Pintura, Pintura Próxima” stand out. (2022), an exhibition in honor of colleague and artist Gelson Radaelli, curated by Eduardo Veras and Felipe Caldas. “Mimetic Drawings” marks his third solo exhibition, the previous ones being “Cosmogonia” in 1994 (Gallery Espaço Institucional, Casa de Cultura Mario Quintana) and “The Floating Object” in 2014 (Estúdio Clio).
The enigmatic phrase of the famous French philosopher Sartre, “Hell is the other”, ironically summed up the differences and challenges of life in society. She also pointed to identity issues and the human tendency to project onto others. Roland Barthes, another French philosopher, proposed something more optimistic when he wrote “How to live together?”, a 1977 book that remains relevant today.
The exhibition that opens this Saturday at V744atelier promises to address these and other issues, representing the result of a doctoral thesis and more than four years of work. For the artist, who has been exploring experiments between painting and drawing since 1988, the exhibition is not just the product of those four years, but the culmination of his reflections since the 1980s.
