This Sunday, May 7th, São Leopoldo hosts the Copa Sul Freestyle, in which 32 MCs from Rio Grande do Sul will compete in rap battles. The event is open to the public and will take place in the domains of Batalha São Hell, on the stage of São Leopoldo Station, starting at 4 pm.
The Municipal Secretary of Human Rights (Sedhu), through the Youth Department, is supporting the program.
Copa Sul Freestyle is a project that started in 2018, by managing the traditional Batalha da Pista de Santa Cruz do Sul. The event, which takes place annually, is always based in different cities and aims to cover municipalities in all regions of the state: capital, metropolitan, coastal and interior. The choice of headquarters is made by consensus between the cores of various battles.
The champion of the cup is qualified for the Batalha da FH and Batalha da Aldeia held in Muçum (RS) and will feature shows by Costa Gold and Haikaiss. One of the organizers and founders of Batalha São Hell, João Wesley, points out that “the Freestyle Cup is undoubtedly one of the biggest Hip Hop events in the state”.
The MCs that participate in the cup were classified through selections. “Batalha São Hell will be hosting the event, as it is one of the most traditional battles in RS, with more than 8 years of history. So we received the invitation to host this cultural show and we were honored”, he says.
The head of the Youth Department, Júlia Langner, points out that Sedhu’s support is extremely important because it is a view coming from the municipal government. “We know the importance and legitimacy that the Hip Hop movement has in the production of culture, specifically in the lives of young people, through rhyme battles. That’s why the Youth Department has been building these links between social movements and secretariats, to increasingly promote the expansion and appreciation of various cultural manifestations”, she emphasizes.
