On Wednesday (26), Gramadozoo sent a puma and an ocelot to the Zoo at the University of Caxias do Sul (UCS), paying for all the clinical treatment and maintenance of the animals in captivity, in addition to their transfer to Caxias. The puma was rescued as a newborn on BR-285, in Vacaria, in 2020, while the ocelot was born in Gramadozoo in 2021.
With authorization from the State Department of the Environment (Sema), which is responsible for handling wild animals in Rio Grande do Sul, the transfer was carried out because the animals would not be able to survive alone in the wild. According to veterinarian Jorge Lima, technical manager at Gramadozoo, the two young males are in excellent health conditions, despite having been raised in captivity since they were puppies.
At the Gramado zoo, the animals received all the nutritional and veterinary support until adulthood, in addition to environmental enrichment activities to stimulate their instincts. “With the transfer, we fulfilled one of the main pillars of zoos: ensuring the conservation of species”, says Lima.
