The musical “Hedwig and the Enraged Centimeter” will premiere in Porto Alegre on May 5th and 6th at Teatro CIEE. The production features music and lyrics by Stephen Trask and text by John Cameron Mitchell, adapted by Jonas Klabin. The play is a partnership between Gustavo Essbich and the United Talent Agency, directed by Ivan Parente.
Hedwig, the main character, is a rock singer who was born a boy in East Germany and was named Hansel. Growing up listening to American radio, Hansel always knew she would be a rock star and that one day she would find her soul mate. Tickets for the show are available on the Sympla platform.
This is the first staging of “Hedwig and the Enraged Centimeter” outside the Rio-São Paulo axis since 2014 and brings together mainly actors and technicians from Rio Grande do Sul. Hedwig was created by John Cameron Mitchell, who portrayed the character in the original off-Broadway production in 1998 and directed the film version of the musical three years later. Described by Rolling Stone as “the best rock musical of all time”, Hedwig tells the story of love and self-knowledge of a defenseless being trying to find himself in the midst of such a cruel world.
In the role of Hedwig, Gustavo Essbich, a big fan of the work, finally fulfills his dream of producing and starring in the show, showing the true essence of the character. The new orchestration of the songs follows a more punk rock aesthetic, resulting in energetic and extravagant performances. Essbich promises to present a new Hedwig, with ambitions and energy to seek her recognition and discover who she really is.
The soundtrack includes several memorable songs such as Wicked Little Town, The Origin of Love and Sugar Daddy. The musical has already been staged in several countries around the world and featured interpretations by Neil Patrick Harris, Michael C. Hall, Darren Criss and Taye Diggs in the lead role. In Brazil, the show premiered in 2010 with Paulo Vilhena and Pierre Baitelli.
