As of May 6th, the Iberê Foundation will inaugurate the exhibition entitled “The strange disappearance of Vera Chaves Barcellos”. The exhibition will be open until July 30th and will occupy three floors of the cultural center.
The exhibition will feature 59 works by Vera Chaves Barcellos, ranging from works from the 1960s, when the artist was experimenting with painting and drawing, through the phase in which she worked with woodcuts, to her most recent works, which highlight her relationship with photography. The retrospective will also feature artist books and videos. The curatorship is by Raphael Fonseca (RJ).
The research by Vera Chaves Barcellos, 85 years old, has as its starting point the relationship between the body and time: interpreting characters and narratives from the past and the future, focusing on stories that were left out of historiography, documenting and collecting materials from archive of local events or personal memory. Photography was a way of bringing Vera back to reality, a more objective eye to look at the world around her.
The artist has participated in several individual and collective exhibitions in Brazil and abroad. She has works in museums such as MAM, São Paulo, MAR, Rio de Janeiro, Museo Reina Sofia, Madrid, and MACBA, Barcelona, and in national and international private collections. Also noteworthy is Vera’s cultural activity in the Brazilian artistic milieu.
In the 1970s, she was one of the founders and members of the Nervo Óptico group (1976-1978), a collective of artists dedicated to the debate and production of contemporary art. In addition to continuing to work as a visual artist, she curates exhibitions and manages the foundation that bears her name, located in Viamão / RS.
