Last weekend, the Food Bank, which is part of the Municipal Department of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (SMAPA), held another edition of Solidarity Saturday. The event took place in around 40 markets in Caxias do Sul and collected approximately 8,000 kilos of food.
Throughout 2022, donations collected on Solidarity Saturday totaled 105,600 kilos of food. The items were donated to entities registered with the Food Bank. Since its founding in 2005, the Bank has already distributed more than 12 million kilos of food.
SMPA’s Food Safety team is looking for volunteers for Solidarity Saturday. “This is one of the main initiatives that help the Food Bank to maintain the necessary donations to combat the hunger of many families”, says the manager of Food and Nutritional Security at SMAPA, Luana Mugnaga. Contact can be via WhatsApp (54) 98429.6291.
SOLIDARY HAZING
Another action that helped the Food Bank last weekend was the Solidarity Trot, promoted throughout the state by medical schools and by the Academic Nucleus/NAS of the Medical Union of RS (SIMERS). “The Solidarity Hazing was created in 2008 to replace violent pranks with solidarity actions, contributing to the training of future doctors”, explains PUCRS medical student and NAS vice president, Carina Marangoni.
In Caxias do Sul, the action was carried out in partnership with the UCS Medicine. Forty students collected around two thousand kilos of food in six city markets. In addition to food donations, the Solidarity Trot involves donating blood and collecting plastic caps, among other solidarity initiatives. The university that scores the most points is declared the winner. The activities officially end on Thursday (04/20).
