Novo Hamburgo is known as the National Footwear Capital, but the city is expanding its horizons and seeking recognition in other areas. An example of this is the Nucleus of Youth Orchestras Project (NOJ), which is expanding its activities as of this month of April and promises to bring even more prominence to the city in the field of music.
The NOJ Project is starting a new cycle and, to celebrate, it will hold its Inaugural Class on April 17th at 7 pm at feevale theater. The event will feature the special participation of the Orquestra de Sopros de Novo Hamburgo and is part of the city’s 96th anniversary celebrations. The show was planned to highlight the work of the Nucleus and welcome members, family members, sponsors, supporters and authorities. It will be a special moment to mark the beginning of musical learning that will extend throughout 2023.
This month also marks the beginning of eight new NOJ Project hubs in neighborhoods that were not yet served by the program, including Hamburgo Velho, Roselândia, Ideal, Canudos, Liberdade, Rondônia, Rincão and São José. New centers are already in operation at EMEB São Jacó, EMEB Francisca Saile, EMEB Imperatriz Leopoldina, EMEB Machado de Assis and EMEF Hermes da Fonseca schools. In addition, negotiations are being finalized to open enrollment at the EMEB Elvira Brand Grin, EEEM Dom Pedro II and Colégio Estadual Senador Alberto Pasqualini schools. In March, the Advanced Nucleus was also started with 18 young musicians who have already been participating in the project for some time. With that, there will be 8 new poles in 2023, totaling 16.
Until last year, the NOJ Project had seven poles financed only by the Municipal Administration. However, starting this year, funds were raised through the Incentive Law to create eight more poles in schools, according to Renato Santos, NOJ’s pedagogical coordinator. He also points out that since March, weekly meetings have been held at the Culture Center with the project’s Advanced Nucleus to offer extra teaching to outstanding students. “I believe they will serve as a model and incentive for the new students who are arriving”, concludes Renato.

The Núcleo de Orquestras Jovens de Novo Hamburgo project is an initiative of the Departments of Culture and Education to make the city one of the main centers of music education in Latin America. Created in September 2018 in partnership with the Arlindo Ruggeri Institute, the program offers students from municipal schools classes in musical instruments, theory, musical perception and group practice. The goal is to take classes to 54 locations, including municipal schools and public spaces, with a total of 25 instruments divided between violins, violas, cellos and double basses.
