Last week, Anjoum Noorani, Consul General of the United Kingdom in Rio de Janeiro, and Nick Burridge, President of the British Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Brazil, led a delegation of 20 people on a visit to the Nuclear Power Station in Angra dos Reis. The purpose of the visit was to learn about the clean hydrogen production project at the plants.
The purpose of the visit to Nuclear Power Station in Angra dos Reis went to see the clean hydrogen production project at the plants. The project is currently in the feasibility study phase and is a partnership between Eletronuclear, Furnas and Itaipu Technological Park.
During the visit to the Nuclear Power Station in Angra dos Reis, Eletronuclear’s R&D and Innovation coordinator, Karla Lepetitgaland, presented the advantages of hydrogen produced from a nuclear source. She explained that it is possible to carry out seawater electrolysis instead of using fresh water. “We believe that clean hydrogen is one of the ways to decarbonize the planet’s energy. It is produced organically by the mills in a completely sustainable way. That is why we are looking for ways to make its use feasible,” said Karla.
During the presentation of the project, the president of the British Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Brazil, Nick Burridge, was amazed by the proposal: “I found the idea of using something that is already part of the business, which is being produced as part of the business, part of energy production and which can add value, to be brilliant”, he said. He highlighted the possibility of a partnership between the United Kingdom and Brazil in this sector: “With the exchange of technology, exchange of ideas, exchange of experiences. I see it as a big possibility here,” he said.
The UK Consul General in Rio de Janeiro, Anjoum Noorani, also spoke about the clean hydrogen project and the possibility of a partnership between the two countries: “I am a super fanatic in relation to the possibility of hydrogen in the future to both provide security, and lower prices, and fight hydrogen climate change in general. So, I think that in the world we have a lot of potential to use hydrogen quickly to develop our society and to clean our light networks”, he said. He highlighted the opportunity for a partnership between the United Kingdom and Brazil in the production of green hydrogen or clean hydrogen, using British and Brazilian technology: “For me, the possibility of creating this partnership, using British technology, using Brazilian technology, to open the global international hydrogen market for the future to secure energy sources, it is an immense possibility”, concluded the consul.
