The Feira do Peixe Vivo da Semana Santa 2023 in Caxias do Sul was a great success. During the three days of the event, around 20,000 kilos of live fish were sold on Rua Sinimbu, in front of the Diocesan Cathedral.
The Municipal Secretary of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply of Caxias do Sul (SMAPA) accounted for sales and highlighted the quality of the products offered. The production came from five fish farmers from Caxias do Sul, who are dedicated to offering the best for the population.
For producer Telmo Capeletti, from Forqueta, the Feira do Peixe Vivo da Semana Santa 2023 had its ups and downs. “There were days with greater movement of people and others that were calmer”, he says. The greatest demand was for carp.
According to Telmo and his family, who helped him with sales, the consumer profile was varied. Although there were few young people, many middle-aged people attended the fair. “They asked a lot about how to clean and prepare the fish”, adds Telmo.
The Feira do Peixe Vivo da Semana Santa 2023 in Caxias do Sul was a success not only for fish producers, but also for consumers. Rosemere Mesari, for example, took home a catfish bought at the fair for R$23.00/kg. She plans to prepare a delicious Good Friday lunch for four of her family. “Let’s bake the fish in the oven. The recipe is from my sister, who knows how to make everything, even grilled fish in banana leaves”, says Rosemere.
In addition to fish, the fair also offered wines and grape juices from Vinícolas Pagliosa and Sabor da Serra. Although they still haven’t accounted for the total sales, the canteens considered the good demand from consumers. “The biggest expectation is for the last day. So far, the most popular wine is the red burgundy”, evaluates Pedro Tonietto, from Sabor da Serra.
The Feira do Peixe Vivo da Semana Santa is a traditional event in Caxias do Sul. Although it was canceled in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the fair was resumed in 2021 and recorded the sale of 18 tons of fish that year. In 2022, the volume sold increased to 25,000 kg.
In previous years, the fair even recorded sales records of around 50 tons of fish (in 2009 and 2013). This shows how much the population of Caxias do Sul values this event and the products offered by local fish farmers.
