Next Wednesday (April 5), at 8 pm (Brasília time), MF Leilões will broadcast the Rancho Avaré BC Liquidation Auction. This is the most awaited shot of dogs of the Border Collie breed with aptitude for work, promoted by breeder Rogério Figueiredo. Imported pure bloodline dogs will be offered, ideal for breeders looking to strengthen the genetic base of the pack or enter a promising market: agribusiness.
They will remain available for pre-bid until the start of the live broadcast on the online auction platform of the MF Rural ecosystem, which offers numerous digital solutions to the rural man, from a diversified marketplace specialized in agriculture to the provision of logistics, communication, education, payments and digital banking.
“MF Leilões has a very interesting format. Investors are able to better plan their purchases, assess the quality of the dogs in advance and have a perception of the quotations practiced in the market for superior breed genetics”, reports Figueiredo.
He owns Rancho Avaré BC, based in Araçoiaba da Serra (SP), a traditional stronghold of working Border Collie champion bloodlines. The kennel is also recognized as the largest importer and exporter of the breed in South America and the only one with 100% of the dogs genetically tested for a series of diseases, such as hip dysplasia, which can cause pain and compromise the dog’s performance.
“DNA tests are carried out in Finland using a technology that accurately identifies the genetic predisposition to 212 diseases. The batches also come with specific radiographic reports of the hip region”, points out the breeder.
Rancho Avaré BC has a history of two decades of selection of English, Scottish and North American lineages, genetics capillarized throughout the national territory and in ten other countries. One of its exponents is the Kinloch Cian, considered a “watershed” in the breed.
After being imported, in just two years, almost all Brazilian packs already had the animal’s blood, something seen until today in regional and state competitions and also in the “Brasileirão” of the breed. Other highlights are the bitches Bandida Avaré BC and Lexi Avaré BC, which make up the breeding base. “They are the matriarchs of several race champions”, points out Figueiredo.
Border Collie makes up for a labor shortage
With the worsening rural exodus, many producers, especially cattle and sheep breeders, are turning to Border Collie dogs to manage their herds. Despite being an ancient practice, until recently, some resistance was observed in the countryside.
The first specimens were imported in the 1990s, but little was technically known about the breed. Since then, with the maturation of the lineages and the training of coaches, paradigms, little by little, are being broken. “The cradle of this genetics are places like Europe, where there are almost no employees on rural properties. Management is carried out by the breeders themselves in the company of their dogs”, reports Figueiredo.
O Border Collie evolved in such a way that, currently, only one animal is capable of masterfully driving up to 1,000 sheep or 100 cattle, without bothering to travel long distances, even in rugged topography. They walk in soggy or steep areas, going to places impossible to reach on horseback. Because they are genetically selected for this purpose, they see the service as a big joke.
They exert pressure and relief actions, obeying the driver’s commands, which can be in English or Portuguese, depending on the training. They use nibbles only in extreme cases and are ideal for production systems aligned with animal welfare.
a promising market
The Rancho Avaré BC Liquidation Auction is a great showcase of a relatively new market, but one that is booming. Prices are impressive, with dogs being sold for up to R$ 50,000.00 and coverages that can be worth R$ 4,000.00. “Prices will depend on pedigree and history in herding competitions. Whoever invests in this auction will start at the top of the shelf”, guarantees Figueiredo.
Another segment to be explored is the sale of service dogs that can fetch up to BRL 15,000.00, already trained. The marketing, in this case, is the fact that a single dog is capable of doing the work of up to three people, demanding as salary only love, affection, veterinary care and a super premium feed. “They also exempt their tutors from labor lawsuits or absences caused by accidents”, jokes Figueiredo.
