On April 2, Autism Awareness Day is celebrated and the second anniversary of Casa Azul, which is located in Praça Rio Grande Shopping. Casa Azul is the headquarters of AMAR – Association of Parents and Friends of Autistic People in Rio Grande – and was the first step of the “Praça Inclusivo” project. This project aims to promote the appreciation, social inclusion and recognition of People with Disabilities (PwD’s) at Praça Shopping.
Over these 2 years, Praça Shopping developed several pioneering social projects in the city for people with Autism. Among them are exclusive parking spaces, preferential service signs in stores and supermarkets and ‘Cine Azul’, a monthly inclusive cinema session. Today, another step forward was achieved with the inauguration of 10 priority tables for people with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) in the Food Court, in front of the cinema.
The inauguration was attended by Mayor Fábio Branco; first lady Luciane Compiani Branco; the Secretary of Citizenship and Social Assistance, Evandro Silveira; and the community of parents and caregivers of AMAR Rio Grande.
“We need to make the city a reference center and, together with AMAR, join forces so that we have quality care for those who need help. Congratulations on 2 years of Casa Azul, a difficult and extremely important volunteer work, and congratulations to Praça Shopping for giving up this space and for being involved in so many social initiatives, always being such an important partner”, highlighted Mayor Fábio Branco.
“As an atypical father, my testimony is the care that we always receive from this important institution that is AMAR, which has donated itself in favor of our city, giving guidance, pedagogical and assistance advice, and everything that atypical families need. We congratulate AMAR and Praça Shopping, for always opening their doors and heart to social activities”, highlighted the secretary of SMCAS, Evandro Silveira.
Praça is also a pioneer in the city in the special training given to the mall’s security team, tenants and employees, in supporting families with ASD. Because it is an invisible disability, training provides welcome in public environments, creating a space of respect and coexistence among all.
“It was very audacious for Praça Shopping to bring into a shopping center, in an unprecedented way, an association that deals with Autism. This generated visibility for AMAR. When we talk about awareness, we are talking about a place where there are priority queue signs, parking and special tables, and employees trained to serve this public. This is looking beyond today’s date”, concluded Rosane Farias, Social Worker at AMAR.
The “Inclusive Square Project” promotes the well-being of People with Disabilities in everyday social spaces, such as shopping centers and stores, offering capacity and accessibility to all customers.
