Australian scientists have developed a nasal spray capable of producing an erection in just five minutes. The researchers point out that the product, called Spontan, can be up to 10 times faster than Viagra to treat erectile dysfunction. The expectation is that it will be sold in the US in up to two years.
The drug was developed by pharmaceutical company LTR Pharma, based in Brisbane, Australia. The spray uses vardenafil as the active ingredient and works faster because it is absorbed directly into the bloodstream through the nose. Viagra, on the other hand, is composed of sildenafil and, as it is an orally ingested pill, its effects take from 30 minutes to an hour to appear because the medicine needs to be absorbed by the digestive system.
Early proof-of-concept studies conducted in California, USA, showed that the treatment worked within five to 15 minutes. New tests are being carried out in Australia, which will start recruiting men in the second half of this year. The results of human trials are expected to be released in the first half of next year and the product will hit the market in 2025.
When a man has an erection, the smooth muscles around the penis relax, allowing blood to flow to the area. In people with erectile dysfunction, this system can be disrupted by heart disease or emotional issues such as stress and anxiety, limiting blood flow to the penis.
Drugs like Viagra and the spray being developed work by relaxing the muscle cells in the blood vessels that supply the penis, allowing more blood to flow into it. The drug also thins the blood making it flow more easily.
When excited, the increased blood flow allows a man to have a stronger erection.
It is estimated that erectile dysfunction affects around 40% of men, with the prevalence increasing with advancing age.
