A true and highly complex task force marked the 10th stage of the Cleaning of the Seas project, organized by Associação Náutica Brasileira (ACATMAR), Acquanauta Floripa and Mundo Mar diving school, last Saturday, on Ilha do Arvoredo.
Faced with the difficult access to the site to dismantle the wreckage that was left of a ship that sank 10 years ago, once again the project volunteers put on a special show in a naturally hostile environment. An enormous amount of waste that arrives through the sea currents and is deposited on the shore of the so-called Saco do Capim, on the Island, was rescued, one of the few places released for diving tourism.
“You can find everything, due to the huge amount of garbage that comes through the sea currents and is deposited on the coast. We found it. for example, bottles and plastics coming from very distant places, like Malaysia and China”, says Leandro ‘Mané’ Ferrari, president of ACATMAR. A total of 3.5 tons of garbage were collected.which accumulate in this true paradise within the Arvoredo Marine Biological Reserve.
“With this stage, 10 years of dedication to this cause, which belongs to everyone and which every year more and more volunteers are engaged in respect for our nature”, says Michele Castilho, director of the project.
To date, Cleaning the Seas has already removed more than 130 tons of garbage from the bottom of the sea, beaches and coasts in various locations – and given the correct destination.
During the year 2023, several other actions will take place as a result of the garbage removal stages, such as lectures in schools for young people and children, exhibition of the removed garbage, participation in seminars and environmental awareness events
The 10th season of the Cleaning of the Seas project is promoted by Associação Náutica Brasileira (ACATMAR), Mundo Mar and Acquanauta Floripa, with the sponsorship of FORT Atacadista.
The Ilha do Arvoredo stage had the support of the Municipality of Florianópolis, the Environmental Military Police, ICMBioSC Military Fire Brigade, BOATLUX, Atlântida Marina, Neptune Generators, VERTEX Oil Spill Supply and Kattamaram Floripa.
