The Porto Alegre Symphony Orchestra (OSPA) will perform this Sunday (19), in the Recital Room, the premiere of the Chamber Music Series in the 2023 season.
In the presentation, the Duo Sonata, formed by Vladimir Romanov (viola) and André Carrara (piano), interprets “Sonata nº 1” by Johannes Brahms. Trio Tri, formed by Elisa Machado (soprano), Eduardo Knob (piano) and Israel Oliveira (horn), performs works by Osvaldo Lacerda and Franz Schubert. Admission is free and on a first-come, first-served basis.
The “Sonata nº 1 in F Minor, Op. 120” was one of the last works composed by Brahms. The piece was composed in 1894, along with “Sonata No. 2”, originally for the clarinetist Richard Mühlfeld, director of the Meiningen Orchestra.
OSPA pianist André Carrara comments: “The two ‘Sonatas Op. 120’ were arranged by Brahms to be performed on clarinet or viola. These two sonatas seem to belong together more than simply their common opus number.” The pianist performs the four movements of “Sonata nº 1” alongside the violist Vladimir Romanov, forming the Duo Sonata.
Soon after, Trio Tri performs the second part of the recital. The group is formed by Elisa Machado, soprano and professor of vocal technique at the OSPA Symphonic Choir, Eduardo Knob, pianist of the choral group, and Israel Oliveira, horn player at OSPA.
The “Melody for Solo Horn”, by Brazilian composer Osvaldo Lacerda, begins the program. “It is perhaps the best-known Brazilian work for this instrument”, highlights Israel, pointing out a similarity with “Etude para Trompa Solo”, by Camargo Guarnieri.”
Then Trio Tri performs a series of pieces by Franz Schubert, starting with “Ständchen, D. 899”. Originally written for voice and piano, the song was later transcribed for several instruments, including horn.
Pianist Eduardo Knob also highlights “Impromptu nº 2” as “a work of great beauty and emotional depth, which expresses the melancholic and introspective soul of the composer”. At the end of the performance, soprano Elisa Machado joins the group to sing “Rastlose Liebe, Op. 5, nº 1”, “Gretchen am Spinnrade, Op. 2” and “Auf dem Strom, Op. 119”.
