An informative note with the technical criteria needed to inspect the installation and operation of workers’ accommodation in Rio Grande do Sul was published by the Health Department (SES), through the State Health Surveillance Center (Cevs), this Thursday -Friday (2). The objective is to guide the Municipal Health Surveillance Services on protection and prevention measures to avoid or reduce work-related illnesses and accidents, in accordance with the legislation.
“This note aims to protect health, monitor environments and allow municipalities to notify whenever they encounter a situation that does not comply with basic guidelines”, explained the Secretary of Health, Arita Bergmann.
Accommodations
In the case of infrastructure, it is required that the accommodations be ventilated, have lighting and be covered with materials that guarantee thermal and acoustic insulation, protection against humidity and fire safety. They must also include potable water, sanitary facilities, sewage system, shower with hot and cold water and separation by gender, in addition to good conditions of organization, conservation, hygiene and cleanliness, compatible with the number of workers.
Food
As for food, it is forbidden to prepare meals inside the rooms. The existence of a place for meals must have enough seats and tables, counters or similar for workers, means for preserving and heating meals, place and material for washing utensils used in meals and drinking water for consumption. If the meal is provided by a third-party company, it must follow good food service practices.
Health
In the case of health conditions, it is recommended that the person with symptoms be evaluated in a health service, avoiding possible spread among other workers. The Health Department recommends special attention to respiratory diseases; waterborne and foodborne diseases; exogenous intoxications; and work-related illnesses and injuries, which must be immediately reported to municipal health surveillance.
It is also advised that employers encourage workers, upon admission, to update vaccination against covid-19, influenza (flu), hepatitis B and other diseases, as well as periodically, according to the calendar and taking into account the activities exercised. The norm prohibits the permanence of sick people in the accommodation.
“We monitor the work so that the work does not occur in conditions that may aggravate the worker’s health”, highlighted Arita. “The note offers municipalities a reference so that they can see, when inspecting a collective and transitory accommodation, criteria to verify where people are staying, if there are toilets, where they have meals, hygiene conditions and care with food. ”
