Although vaccination against covid-19 is not mandatory in Brazil — whether for adults or children — the mayor of São Bernardo do Campo (SP), Orlando Morando (PSDB), said in a live broadcast last Thursday, 20, that the school will ask for proof of vaccination against covid-19 and that it will deliver a list with the name of unvaccinated children who go to school, to the Public Ministry.
“The school will ask for proof of vaccination, the school will ask for it, as it already does. (…) What we will add is to ask for proof of vaccination against covid. ‘I don’t want to give my child the vaccine’. It’s your right, it’s your right. My appeal, from my team, is for you to vaccinate. But your child’s responsibility is yours, and I know that.”
Morando said that he will hand over a list to the Public Ministry with the names of those who have not been vaccinated, but that unvaccinated children will not be prevented from attending school:
“What will we do? We are going to make a list and bring it to the attention of the Public Ministry for Children and Adolescents. So here you are, Mr and Mrs Prosecutor, these children, their parents confirmed that they were not vaccinated by their decision. Even so, of course, they will have access to school.”
In another excerpt, the mayor also stated that his team is evaluating the possibility of separating unvaccinated children in the classroom:
“Our education team is evaluating whether we would be able to separate unvaccinated children. We’re working on it. Why? I immunized my son, I protected my son. But at the same time, I’m going to put my child with a child that the father chose not to immunize. So it’s a huge controversy.”

Judge encourages complaints
As reported by Oeste, the judge of the Childhood and Youth Court of Guarulhos (SP) Iberê Dias encouraged the population to denounce parents who do not vaccinate their children against covid-19.
“Without a doubt, you should report”, said the magistrate in an interview with Jornal da Cultura, when asked about how citizens should proceed if they know of a child who has not been vaccinated by the parents’ decision. “They must bring this fact to the attention of the Guardianship Council of the region or to the Public Ministry”, he said.
The controversy surrounding childhood vaccination against covid-19 led the National Federation of Private Schools (Fenep) to advise private educational institutions not to require a vaccination certificate from students when they return to school. On Monday 10th, parents of students from the American School of Rio de Janeiro (Earj) released a petition that gathered more than 500 signatures against the mandatory immunization.
According to the document, “the vaccination of children must be an attribution of the parents, and it is not up to the school principal or his/her directors to have the moral right or medical competence to compel parents to vaccinate their children, under penalty of depriving them of attend school in person”.
Earj has communicated to parents and guardians that it will require the presentation of the “vaccination passport” from students aged 5 to 12 years old so that they can attend face-to-face classes.
In an interview with Radio Jovem Pan’s program Direto ao Ponto, general practitioner and doctor in immunology Roberto Zeballos stated that, as they are a lower risk group, children do not need to be vaccinated in an emergency. “I am not in favor of vaccinating children against covid with the vaccines that are available today,” he said. “Anyway, I think parents should ask their pediatrician for guidance and be free to do what they feel is right.”
