Between March 9th and 11th, Porto Alegre receives international staff specialized in the transcatheter treatment of structural heart diseases. On that occasion, the doctors met at the TVI Symposium – Transcatheter Valve Intervention at the Hilton Hotel (R. Olavo Barreto Viana, 18).
Specialists from several countries and from many Brazilian states will debate, mainly, the minimally invasive method that corrects the blood flow compromised by lesions in the heart valves. The procedure eliminates the cut in the chest to access the heart.
Procedure
It consists of introducing the catheter (thin tube) through a small incision, usually in the groin artery. Supported by images; the catheter carries the artificial valve compressed at the tip, navigating inside the blood vessels. At the affected site, the prosthesis is released, expanded and installed, replacing the injured valve. In this way, the blood course is corrected.
As soon as it appeared, the transcatheter intervention was indicated only for people over 80 years of age and at high risk for conventional surgery with chest opening. Now, with the advancement of technology and science, it can be performed on people aged 65 and over, preserving even more lives.
– The transcatheter technique is performed under local anesthesia, requires fewer days of hospitalization, provides faster recovery, offers more comfort to the patient and, mainly, reduces the occurrence of sequelae derived from standard surgery. – Summarize Dr. Eduardo Keller Saadi, cardiovascular surgeon and coordinator of the TVI Symposium.
For over 15 years, physician, professor at UFRGS and researcher from Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Keller Saadi has multiplied and stood out in transcatheter execution. He was the first Brazilian to receive certification for CoreValve transcatheter valve implantation and gained international recognition. And so, Porto Alegre, which has become a reference center in transcatheter valve intervention, hosts the TVI Symposium, attracting global specialists in the area.
It is the experienced Dr. Saadi who coordinates the event’s organizing team. A fortnight of foreign speakers come from the United States, Canada, Europe (Germany, Italy, Switzerland, France) and Latin America (Argentina and Venezuela). Only three participate online. The Brazilian team is made up of 51 exponents from various states.
On the first day of TVI (March 9), there are theoretical and practical courses. The program features product demonstrations, TVI simulators and “hands on” (manipulation) and “step by step” of the main transcatheter procedures.
On the 10th and 11th, speakers address heart diseases that disrupt and interrupt normal blood flow. Emphasis is placed on the content of the scientific event on treatments that affect the Aortic, Mitral and Tricuspid valves.
