Without pretending to be pleasant or polite, Poeta Vagabundo lives in drama, cunning and freedom. Protagonist and lyrical self of A Casa Cósmica, he does not mince words to opine about politics, religion, human relations and, above all, common sense – and who decides to follow him without question. For him, the structure of “obeying and being obeyed” is inglorious and whoever chooses to break away from the mass will be able to enjoy the pleasures of life, such as love, humor and art.
The eccentric poet created by the gaucho writer Gustavo Malagigi provokes in the reader a miscellany of feelings, which can vary quickly between joy and disgust. The very title of the work makes reference to this unique cosmos, sometimes orderly, sometimes chaotic, created by the protagonist and in which the criticisms are made carefree in tones of sarcasm, acidity and revolt, but also with a good dose of drama, affection and delicacy.
While the poem “Menina” exposes the rejection of conservatism, machismo and extremism, the chronicle “Canários caribenhos” uses poetic language, but a dry tone, to question the dictatorial government of Castroist Cuba. A true collection dedicated to those who don’t conform to shallow definitions of how life is or should be; people who, like him, are looking for relief from their own tragedies, or doses of sin to quench anxieties.
My thoughts are an affront to the world. My ideas are diabolical!
Just imagine: I talk about freedom, I talk about love, about sex… I do discuss religion,
soccer, politics… I like poetry. I even dare, from time to time, to write
some verses without great technique. I usually think…. (The Cosmic House, p. 151)
Inspired by the satirical spirit of Gregório de Matos (O Boca do Inferno), and by the insanity of the gaucho playwright Qorpo-Santo, precursor of the theater of the absurd in Brazil, Malagigi reacts to the world through literature. It is through words that he feels he is transcending the monotonous reality imposed by the common sense he criticizes.
