The Environmental Defense Group (GDA) Ipson Pavani rescued five wild birds on Thursday, February 16, in the Santos Dumont neighborhood, in São Leopoldo. The agents, who were responding to another occurrence, noticed that there were cages hanging from a tree in front of a residence with wild birds.
Professionals tried to find those responsible for the animals, but no one answered.
The birds, being three Canaries of the Earth, one red crested cardinal and a Coleirinho, are healthy. On the morning of this Friday, the 17th, agents took the birds to the Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama), located in Porto Alegre.
ground canary
The ground canary is a species of passerine bird that is native to Brazil and other countries in South America, such as Argentina and Uruguay. It is a small bird, measuring about 12 centimeters in length, with predominantly olive-brown plumage on the upper parts and pale yellow on the underparts.
Ground canaries have strong, conical beaks, which are well adapted for cracking seeds and fruit. Males and females are similar in appearance, but males tend to have more vibrant colors on their head and throat. They also have a distinctive song, which is usually loud and high-pitched.
These birds are common in areas of dense vegetation, such as forests, cerrados and gardens, and are very adaptable in relation to their habitat, and can be found in a variety of environments, from urban areas to tropical forests. They feed mainly on seeds, fruits and insects.
Ground canaries are popular among bird keepers, but it is important to remember that capturing these birds from the wild is illegal and could be detrimental to the conservation of the species.
