A 7-year-old girl was diagnosed with breast cancer after her mother noticed a lump under her nipple. The disease can affect children and adolescents, but these are very rare cases.
Little Maura Muñoz’s family lives in Quillota, Chile, and is now facing the treatment that began with the removal of the breast that had barely developed.
Patricia, the little girl’s mother, told the program 24horasfrom Televisión Nacional de Chile (TVN), how she realized that something was wrong with her daughter.
– One day I was giving her a bath and, after drying and applying cream, I noticed that she had a little bean under her nipple – she tells that she ran to look for a doctor.
And continued:
– The doctor told me that what Maura had was not normal, that if I waited too long it would grow, but he never told me it could come to that. That was in August and in September [de 2022]we found out that Maura had cancer.
The breast was removed to prevent the cancer from spreading further. Now doctors await the results of the tests to find out if there was metastasis. As this is a rare case, oncologists in Chile are in contact with specialists in Spain who have already treated similar cases.
Maura’s family may need to travel to Europe if part of the treatment with Spanish doctors is needed.
