With outstanding aptitude for meat production, the Bonsmara breed started to have its genealogical record operated by the National Association of Herd-Book Collares Breeders (ANC). Until then, the function belonged to the Brazilian Association of Bonsmara Breeders (ABCB).
The delegation to the ANC was authorized in November 2022 by the Ministry of Agriculture, initiating the migration of records and genealogy control to the entity. “For us it is a pleasure to welcome breeders to the ANC. Together with them, we will be working for the advancement of Bonsmara in Brazilian herds”, guarantees the president of the association, Joaquin Villegas.
President of ABCB, Marconi Andrade Cherulli, points out that the transfer of the Genealogical Registry Service (SRG) to the ANC ensures greater focus for the association in terms of dedication, management and promotion of the breed in Brazil. “With the ANC assuming the complexity of the genealogical records, the ABCB will be able to dedicate itself full time to what is most precious to us: the Bonsmara from Brazil”, he says. The first embryos arrived in the country began to be born in 2000.
Currently, Brazil has created the breed in São Paulo, Mato Grosso do Sul, Paraná, Goiás, Bahia, Tocantins, Rio de Janeiro, Pernambuco, Piauí and Minas Gerais. Bonsmara joins the 33 bovine breeds and three horses registered under the responsibility of the ANC. “Our goal is to work together with breeders who bet on Bonsmara genetics in the field, guaranteeing their development. It is yet another breed for those looking to produce meat with a difference”, points out the superintendent of records at the entity, Silvia Freitas.
The animals of the breed are characterized by their reddish brown coat. Most of them have smooth and short fur. In addition, they are medium-sized and have well-distributed musculature. Bonsmara cattle are 100% taurine, adaptable, with a docile temperament, easy weight gain, precocity and meat quality. “If you gain in meat quality, in slaughter time and in feed conversion, then the great advantage of the breed is the profit in livestock. Bonsmara is a tool for making meat, for making calves on pasture without complications”, adds Cherulli.
