The journalist and writer from Rio Grande do Sul Percival Puggina is the guest of the Chamber of Industry, Commerce and Services of Caxias do Sul (CIC Caxias) to speak at the February RA. The event takes place on Wednesday (15), at 11:45 am, at the entity’s restaurant. “The future of freedom” will be the theme of Puggina’s lecture. The weekly calendar of events on Mondays will resume on March 6, with RA dinner for delivery of the 19th Entrepreneurial Merit.
Percival Oliveira Puggina was born in 1944, in Santana do Livramento. He graduated in architecture and urbanism in 1969 and dedicated himself to this profession and vocation for 16 years. In practically all of this period, he worked on large projects at Companhia Internacional de Engenharia, at the time one of the three largest design companies in the country.
With the institutional normalization of 1985, he was attracted to party politics, initially joining the newly formed Liberal Front, whose bench, for six years, he was coordinator of the Legislative Assembly. Later, he joined the PDS, today Progressistas.
In the PDS, he created and chaired the Tarso Dutra Foundation for Political Studies and Public Administration for six years, being responsible for training countless young people for public life who today occupy prominent positions in parliaments, governments and municipal administrations. He served as councilor in Porto Alegre, in 1996, as the first substitute, replacing the holder, councilor João Antônio Dib.
In 2013, Percival Puggina resigned from the Progressive Party, abandoning the party life with which he had been involved for three decades.
From the 1980s onwards, he also dedicated himself to literary activity, writing weekly for hundreds of newspapers, magazines, websites and blogs across the country. For 21 years, from 1985 to 2006, she was a weekly columnist for Correio do Povo. From then on, for 10 years, he became a Sunday columnist for Zero Hora. In 2002, he created the company Texto e Contexto Comunicação Ltda., of which he is managing partner, dedicated to content generation.
was awarded by government of the state of Rio Grande do Sul with the Simões Lopes Neto medal, credited to “exceptional performance in the field of Arts” (2010). The Association of Graduates of the Superior School of War (ADESG) awarded him the Medal of Honor for Merit as an emeritus collaborator in RS (2013).
In 2014, he was elected to the Riograndense Academy of Letters, as chair number 7. Received the honorary title of Citizen of Porto Alegre (2019). He received the Medal of Merit Farroupilha from the Legislative Assembly of Rio Grande do Sul (2022).
He is the author of Chronicles Against Totalitarianism (2001), Cuba, the Tragedy of Utopia (2004); Doves and Hawks (2010); The taking of Brazil by the bad Brazilians (2014); and The Tragedy of Utopia (update and expansion of the previous 2019 edition). He participated in the following collective works: Lanterna na Proa – One hundred years of Roberto Campos (2010); Perspectives of Freedom (2016); Deconstructing Paulo Freire (2018); Dynamic Mindset – Thought-provoking ideas that transform (2019).
