The women’s futsal team from São Leopoldo will represent Rio Grande do Sul in the Copa Brasil de Seleções, a championship that brings together a selection from each State registered in the Brazilian Futsal Federation.
The Gaúcha Federation chose the team from São Leopoldo as a representative for having an organized amateur team, formed from the Ary Moura Cup, in which one player from each of the 15 teams in the competition was chosen to form the squad.
The team from São Leopoldo secured a place in the final against the team from Santa Catarina after beating those from Paraná, São Paulo and the Federal District in the previous stages. The decision will be disputed in the city of Itapema, in Santa Catarina, on February 12th.
To pay for the trip, the team needs about R$15,000, which will be used for transport, accommodation and food. So far, R$4,000 has been raised, and the team is looking for partnerships and sponsorships. The championship still gives a place for an international tournament to be played in Canada, between the national champions. If it wins, the team will need more resources to carry out the international trip.
The 15 girls are preparing for the grand finale. Every Monday, at the Celso Morbach Municipal Gym, they train under the command of coach Carlos Eduardo and assistant Alexandro Preto.
The president of the São Leopoldo Women’s Futsal League, as well as a player for the city’s national team, Jaqueline D’avila, highlights the team’s resilience. “We face players from other teams with much more resources. These are girls who are paid for this, who receive support. We are ordinary women and girls from the community, with a lot of disposition, skill and talent”, she stressed.
