Brazil will have one more geosite endorsed in the International Geoparks Network. According to the director of the Geoparks Commission of the Geological Survey of Brazil (SGB-CPRM) and professor of Geology at the Federal University of Goiás (UFG), Joana Sánchez, the analysis process of the aspiring geopark of Caçapava do Sul (RS) is in the last evaluative instances of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The official release is scheduled for May this year.
Geoparques
Recognized by UNESCO, geoparks are places of scientific, cultural, landscape, geological, archaeological, paleontological and historical importance. Belonging to the pampa biome, Caçapava do Sul features marine and continental sedimentary rocks over 500 million years old, and fossils of extinct animals, especially giant sloths.
The geologists representing the universal entity, Antonio Matencio, from Spain; and Mahito Watanabe, from Japan, were accompanied by the Geopark Aspirante Caçapava commission, and the SGB geologist, Marcelo Goffermann, during a visit to geosites, museums and buildings that are symbols of the historical and cultural heritage of the municipality of Caçapava do Sul – held from 6 to November 10 last year.
Joana Sánchez explained that the approval of Caçapava do Sul, together with that of the Geosite Quarta Colônia (RS), “opens the door for new requests for analyzes for other locations in the country and encourages teams that have their processes stuck”.
Two proposals are planned for analysis later this year: Chapada dos Guimarães, in Mato Grosso; and the Geopark Uberaba – Terra dos Gigantes, in Minas Gerais. Joana reinforces the importance of the recognition of geosites by UNESCO to also integrate communities to tourist sites.
“The most interesting thing is to realize that the population is turning its eyes to geology. The geopark has a sustainable development aimed at educating the population that inhabits the place, and this significantly increases tourism and the way to raise income for the population”, he added.
