São Leopoldo held this Sunday (22), the first Expo Black of 2023. The event took place at Praça da Biblioteca and had 13 exhibitors, in an initiative of the Municipal Human Rights Secretariat (Sedhu), through the Department of Racial Equality, with the support of the Municipal Secretariats for Economic, Tourism and Technological Development (Sedettec), Public Security and Community Defense (Semusp) and the Municipal Water and Sewage Service (Semae).
For the Secretary of Human Rights, Nadir Maria de Jesus, the choice of Praça Vinte de Setembro to host the event came from the intention of providing more opportunities for recognition of the work of exhibitors.
According to Adriângela Cabral, head of Sedhu’s Racial Equality Department, Expo Black aims to value and strengthen black culture and identity, in addition to promoting economic activity among the local Afro-descendant community.
Exhibitor Cléria Ferreira worked as a hairdresser for a long time and today makes personalized bags that praise black culture. “I make personalized bags, and they are completely different, whoever buys one of them will have an exclusive piece, there is no equal anywhere else”, she comments.
How to participate in Expo Black
Registration to request participation in Expo Black is done by a digital form which is made available and evaluated by the Sedhu Department of Racial Equality. The requirements are to be a black entrepreneur and sell products that praise black culture.
After approval, a reception process is carried out and forwarded to the Municipal Secretariat for Economic, Tourism and Technological Development (SEDETTEC) for guidance on all the necessary procedures for the interested Afro-entrepreneur to be an exhibitor at the event. If the requirements are not met, the registration information is forwarded to SEDETTEC to enable the interested party to participate in other popular fairs in the municipality.
