In the summer season, the lack of clouds added to the high temperature means that the sun’s rays are greater at this time of year. For this reason, the use of clothing made from fabrics with UV (Ultraviolet) protection technology is recommended by dermatologists.
Seeking to offer comfort and safety to the consumer, Diklatex, a textile company from Santa Catarina, uses Truelife® UV technology, which offers sun protection integrated into the construction of the mesh.
The method, which uses polyamide fiber and dispenses with the application of chemical products, provides protection from sunlight in the UVA (315 to 400 nm) and UVB (290 to 315 nm) ranges with various UPFs (Ultraviolet Protection Factor). According to the World Health Organization, extreme exposure to these rays increases the risk of developing skin cancer by up to 75%.
“UV protective clothing provides even more security and facilities when it comes to sun protection. This technology has no expiry date, as the fabric is not damaged, the functionality will already be present when you wear your UV protection clothing” explains Eduardo Habitzreuter, Engineering manager at Diklatex.
What is the difference between regular clothes and clothes with UV protection?
Just like sunscreens, fabrics have a classification according to the protection factor. The criterion created by the Australian Agency for Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety (ARPANSA), adopted in many countries, including by Brazilian manufacturers, works like this: clothes with UPF 15 and 20 reflect 93.3% to 95.9% of ultraviolet radiation ; from 30 to 35, they block from 96% to 97.4%; with FPU 40, 45 and 50, they reflect more than 97.5%.
“The exposure time is a factor that differentiates each FPU. The lower it is, the shorter the protection time that the product grants the skin, that is, a filter with SPF 30 protects the skin from the action of the sun’s rays for a period 20 times shorter than one with a protection factor 50”, details Edward.
To better understand how this works, just make the following calculation: if, in just ten minutes exposed to the sun without protection, the skin already turns red and burning, when applying a sunscreen with SPF 30, it will take 300 minutes (five hours) to let this start to happen.
