After carrying out a normal delivery, a medical team at the hospital identified that the patient was suffering from hemorrhage, known as uterine inversion, and began to treat her. For this, the woman had to receive intravenous medication in her left hand. But the place started to swell and turns purple.
As a result, she had to be transferred in a hurry to the Intensive Care Center (ICU) of the Hospital da Mulher Intermédica de São Gonçalo, located in the east zone of Baixada Fluminense (RJ). Another medical team noted the seriousness of the case and, to save the rest of the arm, informed that the patient’s hand and wrist needed to be amputated.
In addition, the woman had to stay in the hospital for a few days and away from her newborn baby. Upon returning home, she found it difficult to care for her youngest son the way she would have liked. For this, she had the help of her husband, mother-in-law, mother and sister.
Questioned by IstoÉ about what happened to the woman, the hospital said in a note that it sympathizes with her and deeply regrets what happened. “It reiterates its commitment to investigate with all seriousness, transparency and care the medical and hospital procedures adopted during its care. To this end, he asked the Medical Ethics Committee to coordinate these works.”
“Regardless of this investigation, the hospital has been in contact with the patient and her representatives to provide all possible reception and meet her needs, as well as remaining available for all necessary clarifications to be carried out”, he added.
The Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro informed the portal that the case was registered at the 41st Police Station (Tanque) and is still being investigated as culpable bodily injury. The corporation stressed that it should hear witnesses and request some documents from the hospital to be able to clarify the occurrence.
