A long time ago, bodybuilding ceased to be an activity exclusive to those who want to stay with a “fit” body. Today, strength training is indicated for everyone as a way to prevent, for example, osteopenia, which is the loss of bone mass that occurs during the natural aging process.
Osteopenia often progresses to osteoporosis, a disease characterized by the deterioration of bone tissue. As a result, the bones become fragile and this leads to an increased risk of fractures.
According to Walkíria Brunetti, a physiotherapist specializing in Pilates and RPG, hip, femur and spine fractures are among the most serious and frequent in people with osteoporosis. “Hip and femur fractures usually result in hospitalization and surgery. Spine fractures often lead to height loss, severe back pain and deformities.”
“Unfortunately, hip and femur fractures increase the risk of death due to the complications that can develop during hospitalizations and surgeries, such as hospital infections, pneumonia and other conditions that put life at risk”, comments Walkíria.
muscles and bones
What few people know is that in addition to the progressive loss of bone mass, aging also causes loss of muscle mass, sarcopenia.
“Loss of strength affects balance. From this, the person has a greater risk of falling, so falls are quite frequent in old age. A fall in a person who already has osteoporosis, therefore substantially increases the risk of fractures and its consequences, such as mortality”, explains the specialist.
Unfortunately, osteoporosis is considered a silent disease because it can develop over many years and go unnoticed until a fracture occurs. However, it is necessary to be aware when there is intense pain in the spine, loss of height and sharp kyphosis (hunchback).
strength training
There are several important measures to treat osteoporosis, from calcium intake, vitamin D and medications that help control bone loss. In addition to clinical treatment, it is necessary to invest in strength training and activities that promote muscle strengthening, as well as improve posture, balance and range of motion.
Among the activities that promote these benefits are Pilates and weight training. Although they are different activities, they are complementary and enhance the benefits for musculoskeletal health.
“Bodybuilding increases muscle mass and strengthens muscles. Pilates strengthens muscles with additional benefits such as improved flexibility (range of motion), balance and posture,” comments Walkíria.
“It is worth emphasizing that when the muscles are weakened, a simple trip can cause a fall with a femur fracture, for example. Therefore, a strengthened musculature combined with a good range of motion, posture and balance are fundamental aspects to protect the bones, especially after the age of 50”, concludes Walkíria.
