The Health Department of Taubaté registered a 500% increase in the number of people infected with H3N2, compared to the last two years. According to the balance, in 2019, the region had 17 cases of the disease, decreasing to seven in 2020. This year, however, 48 occurrences have already been confirmed.
According to the Health Campaign Manager of Taubaté Érika Tani, mass contamination of people with H3N2 can bring problems such as low immunity, which represents an open door for covid-19 infection. The disease, despite being common, usually registers more cases between the seasons of October and winter.
To try to contain the spread of the virus, the city’s city hall is stepping up its vaccination efforts. To date, 94% of the population is immunized against H3N2. However, the wave of infections caused by the disease is happening due to mutations in the influenza virus.
