Two Brazilians who landed at Guarulhos International Airport, in São Paulo, tested positive for the Ômicron variant of the coronavirus, identified in South Africa. The information was confirmed by Anvisa (National Health Surveillance Agency) and sources from the Ministry of Health heard by R7.
The result of the test, carried out by the Albert Einstein Laboratory, is still preliminary. The passengers themselves, husband and wife, sought out the testing facility located at the airport (tests are required for return to South Africa).
According to Anvisa, the entry of passengers in Brazil took place on the 23rd, that is, before the worldwide notification of the new variant – the discovery was announced to the WHO (World Health Organization) on the 24th.
According to the agency, given the positive results, the laboratory took the initiative to carry out the genetic sequencing of the samples. Anvisa was notified of the positive results of the tests and the start of procedures for genetic sequencing this Monday (29th) and, this Tuesday (30th), informed that, in previous analyses, the variant Ômicron was identified.
“According to national protocols, the material must be sent to the Adolfo Lutz Institute (IAL), for the purpose of confirming the genetic sequencing. Anvisa also officiated to the Ministry of Health and to the State and Municipal Health Secretariats of São Paulo the health event identified today, for the adoption of the relevant public health measures”, informed the agency, in a note.

The entry of Brazilians from South Africa preceded the edition of the Interministerial Ordinance CC-PR/MS/MJSP/Minfra 660, of November 27, 2021, which temporarily prohibited flights to Brazil that originated in South Africa or passing through the country. The rule also suspended, on a temporary basis, the authorization to board to Brazil for foreign travelers coming from or passing through the African country in the last 14 days before boarding.
Since this Monday (29), Brazil has been preventing the entry of passengers from ten African countries due to the emergence of a new variant of the coronavirus on the continent. The restriction affects South Africa, Angola, Botswana, Essuatini (formerly Swaziland), Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Suspected case in Brasilia
The Health Department of the Federal District reported on Tuesday (30) that it is also monitoring a suspected case of the Ômicron variant of the coronavirus. The patient came from South Africa and tested positive for Covid-19.
The Central Public Health Laboratory of the DF performs genetic sequencing of a patient sample. The objective is to check for the presence of the new variant. The result should be released within four days. There is still no confirmed case of the new strain in Brazil.
According to the secretariat, the man landed in Guarulhos on November 27, with a subsequent departure for Brasília. The flight is the same as another patient with a confirmed case of Covid-19, identified in São Paulo.
The patient is aged between 40 and 49 years and has received three doses of vaccine. The case remains asymptomatic, and the traveler has been in home isolation since his arrival in the capital.
In addition to SP and DF, the states of Paraná and Minas Gerais are investigating suspected cases of the variant.
Cancellation of New Year’s Eve parties in DF
The governor of the Federal District, Ibaneis Rocha, announced that New Year’s Eve parties on the Esplanada dos Ministérios and in five other administrative regions are canceled due to the risks offered by Ômicron.
“In light of recent news about the advancement of the new Covid-19 virus variant, I decided to cancel the parties scheduled for this year’s New Year’s Eve. We have come a long way in fighting the disease and we cannot risk a setback in this fight”, Ibaneis posted on Twitter.
