Walk along roads and trails in the German Hunsrück region, in the same places where the immigration process to Brazil began 200 years ago. The Germans of 1824 walked towards the Rhine River, to embark towards a better life. Brazilians in 2024 will walk in search of enchantment with the stunning landscapes and culture of that region. This is the “Caminhos dos Imigrantes” project, organized by Rota Romântica in August, among the commemorative actions of the Bicentenary of German Immigration.
The trip will embark on August 13th, in Porto Alegre, and return on the 27th. After disembarking in Frankfurt, the walking tourists will go to the city of Emmelshausen, where they will stay. With 4,700 inhabitants, Emmelshausen is located in the State of Rhineland-Palatinate, in a region known as Hunsrück, where many immigrants who colonized Rio Grande do Sul came from.
Daily, the group will be transported to the locations where the walks will take place. There will be nine routes, totaling 109 km (average of 12.9 km per day). The paths will run through beautiful forests, as well as streams with crystal clear water, medieval castles, wineries and their vineyards, small villages, walled cities, agricultural production areas and, of course, the stunning landscapes of the River Rhine. In addition to transportation, the walks will be accompanied by a guide and support car.
After each day’s walk, there will be sightseeing tours in the cities of the Hunsrück. It will be the opportunity to discover the local gastronomy, with emphasis on the excellent wines and beers that are produced there.
Near the end of the trip, the group will participate in Weinmarkt, the Emmelshausen Wine Festival. Since 2018, this German city has had a co-brotherhood bond with the Brazilian Nova Petrópolis. During the 2024 Wine Festival, with the presence of more Brazilians, a monument will be inaugurated in honor of Nova Petrópolis and the Bicentenary of German Immigration. Praising the main reason for the trip, the stone monument will be shaped like a boot, symbolizing the journey of those who left 200 years ago.
