Even with the beginning of labor, pregnant woman Queli Santos Adorno, 35 years old, was refused admission by the doctor at the Santa Cruz da Serra Municipal Maternity Hospital, in Duque de Caxias (RJ), last Friday, 22nd. As a result, the woman ended up giving birth on the unit’s reception floor.
The woman, who is a mother of four children, reported that she arrived at the place around 10pm to have little Azafe. During the first appointment, she was warned by another doctor on duty that she could go into labor at any time and should wait in the maternity ward.
“The first doctor provided excellent care, she treated my sister very well. She asked ‘don’t go home, you might evolve quickly, and this child might be born there’”, said Queli’s sister, Carine Santos Adorno, in an interview with RJTV, on TV Globo.
While waiting for the baby’s arrival, the contractions increased and, after six hours, the pregnant woman underwent a third consultation with another doctor. At the time, the patient received a handwritten document signed by doctor Sheila Peixoto Atthie Maia, with the recommendation that the pregnant woman return home and refuse hospitalization.
“She was very rude to my sister, she treated her mockingly. She said: ‘You shouldn’t even be here, you should be at home, because you’re training’. Then, my sister said: ‘This is my fourth pregnancy, I’m not training, this child is going to be born, doctor, I can’t go home’. And my sister refused to leave,” said Queli’s sister.
After refusing admission, the baby was born at 6am, in the maternity ward reception. The mother and newborn were attended to by the first doctor. However, the health professional, who was returning from rest, was without the necessary equipment.
“I said it, I said it. Negligent doctor, I said. She said so much and she didn’t believe me”, declared the pregnant woman in tears.
Queli and baby Azafe remain hospitalized in the unit, but in good health, according to the Municipal Health Department. According to Extra, her brothers went to report the case to the police station, but claimed that the police did not want to register the incident.
When contacted by Terra, Duque de Caxias City Hall informed, in a note, that the doctor responsible for the care was dismissed from the staff. Furthermore, an internal inquiry was opened to ‘investigate and hold accountable the other conduct of the professionals involved in patient care’.
