According to a study published by the American Heart Association, eating at least three servings of blueberries can save women from heart attacks. This is due to the fruit’s high levels of flavonoids.
These compounds are also present in grapes, strawberries and other vegetables.
Blueberries are rich in a specific type of flavonoid, anthocyanin, which helps dilate arteries and fight plaque buildup, according to the study.
Study Details
Researchers analyzed the berry eating habits of 93,600 women aged 25 to 42 over 18 years.
At the end of the study, they concluded that women who ate three or more servings of blueberries per week reduced their risk of heart attack by up to a third.
However, women who followed a diet rich in other fruits and vegetables did not have the same reduced heart attack risks.
The results occurred independently of other risk factors, such as age, high blood pressure, family history of heart disease, body mass index, level of physical activity, smoking and consumption of alcohol and caffeine.
According to the American Heart Association, including berries, such as blueberries and strawberries, as well as other vegetables and whole grains, is essential to a healthy diet.
The entity highlights that a varied diet is essential to ensure adequate nutrient intake.
